The best Johannesburg suburbs to advertise in (and how to choose yours)

The most common mistake in local outdoor advertising is choosing a suburb by prestige instead of by customer. Sandton is not the best place to advertise; the best place to advertise is wherever the people who buy from you drive every day. After ten years of parking billboards across Gauteng, here is how we think about the map.

Match the suburb to the customer, not the brand

Sandton and Fourways deliver affluent commuter and retail traffic — strong for premium services, medical practices, schools and property. Midrand is the corridor: enormous through-traffic between Johannesburg and Pretoria, ideal for anything with broad appeal and for B2B visibility near the office parks. Randburg and Honeydew are dense family-residential territory where takeaways, gyms, schools and home services thrive.

The East Rand — Boksburg, Benoni, Springs — combines industrial commuting with loyal local retail, and advertising there costs the same as anywhere else while facing far less advertising clutter. The same logic applies to Krugersdorp and the West Rand, and to Centurion on the northern side: less noise, same eyeballs, often better response.

Three questions that pick the suburb for you

First: where do your last fifty customers actually live? Not where you wish they lived — pull the delivery addresses or ask at the till. Second: where do those people slow down? School gates at 07:30, shopping centre approaches on Saturday, taxi routes at month-end. A board in slow traffic is read; a board on a free-flowing road is glimpsed. Third: can you serve the suburb you are considering? Visibility in Benoni is wasted on a business that only delivers in Fourways.

This is also why mobile beats fixed for suburb-level work: if the answer to any of these questions changes, the board moves with it. Our campaigns reposition four times a month within the chosen area, and clients switch suburbs between months as their trade shifts.

The suburbs we cover

Simply Visible runs trailer campaigns in sixteen Gauteng suburbs: Sandton, Midrand, Fourways, Eastgate, Boksburg, West Rand, Benoni, Southgate, Bassonia, Randburg and Honeydew on the Johannesburg side, plus Centurion, Krugersdorp, Springs, Brits and the Vaal. If yours is not on the list, ask — we add locations for campaigns that justify them.

Frequently asked questions

Which Johannesburg suburb has the most traffic for advertising?

Midrand carries some of the heaviest through-traffic in Gauteng as the corridor between Johannesburg and Pretoria. But raw volume only matters if those drivers are your customers — a dense residential suburb like Randburg often outperforms it for local businesses.

Is it cheaper to advertise outside Sandton?

With trailer advertising the rate is the same across our sixteen suburbs — R200 to R285 per day — so the choice is purely about where your customers are, not what you can afford. Static billboard rentals, by contrast, price prestige suburbs steeply higher.
