Mobile billboards — Guides
How to measure mobile billboard results
Outdoor advertising produces no click reports — but a mobile billboard campaign is far from unmeasurable. With a baseline, consistent source-tracking and one or two attribution devices on the artwork, you can see clearly whether the board is paying for itself. This article covers the practical methods, from simplest to most precise, and what "proof of performance" should mean before you even get to results.
Start before the campaign: the baseline
Measurement begins two weeks before the board goes up. Record your current numbers — daily walk-ins, weekly enquiries, WhatsApp messages, quote requests — so the campaign has something to be compared against. Skipping the baseline is the most common measurement mistake: without it, month one's lift is invisible because nobody wrote down what "before" looked like.
Method 1 — Ask every new customer (the 80% solution)
One question, asked consistently: "Where did you hear about us?" Log the answers — a tally on paper or a column in a spreadsheet is enough. It is imperfect (people forget, or say "I drive past you"), but "I drive past you" from a customer in the board's suburb *is* the board working. Consistency matters more than sophistication: every new customer, every time, for the whole campaign.
Method 2 — A board-only response channel
Put a WhatsApp number or keyword on the artwork that appears nowhere else — "WhatsApp BOARD to 084 …" — and every message that arrives through it is attributable to the trailer. In South Africa this doubles as the best response mechanism anyway: WhatsApp is how local customers already contact businesses. A board-only promo code ("Mention RIBS50") does the same job for walk-in businesses.
Method 3 — Offer-matched attribution
If the board carries a specific offer that runs nowhere else — a dish, a joining special, a service price — then every sale of that offer is board-attributed by definition. This is the cleanest method for restaurants, gyms and retail, and it doubles as good board design: specific offers outperform generic branding anyway (see what to put on a billboard).
Method 4 — Digital shadows of a physical board
A board in a suburb leaves digital footprints: branded searches for your business name, Google Business Profile views and direction requests, and website visits from that area all tend to lift while a board stands there. None of this is perfect attribution — but a branded-search lift in the board's suburb, during the campaign, with nothing else changed, is strong evidence. Check your Google Business Profile insights monthly; it is free and most local businesses never look.
What the maths should look like
Convert results to money the same way you budgeted: roughly R6 000 – R8 550 a month on our 2026 plans, against new customers attributed by the methods above, valued over a year rather than a single visit (a new gym member, patient or restaurant regular pays monthly, not once). The break-even framework is in is mobile billboard advertising worth it? — for most local businesses the required number of monthly wins is in single digits.
One honest caveat: give it time. Outdoor recall compounds — month three routinely outperforms month one, and judging the campaign on its first two weeks measures the ramp, not the result.
Proof of performance is not results — but demand it anyway
Before results can be measured, you need proof the campaign physically happened: where the board stood, and when. On our campaigns that is a photograph of the board on location after every reposition — four moves a month, every move photographed — plus weekly photo updates. If an operator cannot show you this trail, you are measuring a campaign that may not have run. It is the first thing to demand from any operator, including us.
Frequently asked questions
Can you track ROI on a mobile billboard?+
Yes, to a working level: baseline + source-asking + a board-only channel or offer gives most businesses a clear read within two to three months. What you cannot get is digital-style per-impression attribution — anyone promising it is overselling.
How many people see a mobile billboard?+
It depends entirely on the position — which is why we place boards on high-traffic centre approaches, intersections and commuter corridors, and photograph every position. Raw eyeballs matter less than whose they are: a board inside your actual catchment converts at multiples of a busier board outside it.
How long before I see results?+
Direct-response boards (specials, openings, events) can produce enquiries in the first week. Recall-driven campaigns (agents, practices, branding) build over two to three months as repetition compounds.
We run photo-verified mobile billboard campaigns across 16 suburbs in Johannesburg and greater Gauteng.
