Mobile billboards — Guides
What is mobile billboard advertising? The complete guide
Mobile billboard advertising is outdoor advertising mounted on a purpose-built trailer that is parked in high-traffic locations and repositioned regularly, instead of being fixed to one site. Your ad sits at eye level beside the road — at shopping centre entrances, busy intersections and commuter routes — and moves to follow your customers. In South Africa, a mobile billboard campaign typically costs a fixed daily rate; ours run from R200 to R285 per day in Gauteng.
This guide explains how the format works, what it costs, who it suits, and — honestly — who it does not.
How mobile billboard advertising works
The mechanics are simple:
- You choose the suburb. The campaign is planned around where your customers live, shop and commute — not around whichever billboard site happens to be vacant.
- Your artwork is printed on a large-format board. Sized to stay legible from across four lanes of traffic. We print in-house, which takes 2 – 3 working days.
- The trailer is parked in a planned high-traffic position. Shopping centre approaches, intersections and commuter corridors, matched to your objective and trading hours.
- It moves on a schedule. Our campaigns include four repositions a month, so the board works multiple positions inside your target area instead of wearing out its welcome in one.
- You get proof. A photograph of the board on location after every move.
The format goes by several names — trailer advertising, billboards on wheels, roadside trailer advertising — which all describe the same thing. (Some markets also use truck-mounted billboards that drive continuously; in South Africa, parked trailers repositioned on a schedule are the dominant model.)
What does it cost?
A fixed daily rate, agreed before the campaign starts. Our 2026 rates run from R200 per day on a 6-month campaign to R285 per day month-to-month, including printing, setup, four moves a month, photo reporting and a fully insured fleet. That works out to roughly R6 000 – R8 550 per month — a fraction of most fixed billboard site rentals, which are quoted as monthly rentals that vary enormously by location. The full breakdown, including what drives the price, is in our 2026 cost guide.
Who is mobile billboard advertising for?
The format fits businesses whose customers come from a defined local area — usually a few suburbs. That is why it works so well for estate agents, restaurants, schools, retail stores, car dealerships, gyms and medical practices: the entire customer base lives within a short drive, and the board can be parked inside exactly that radius.
It also suits anything with a date attached — events, store openings, development launches, enrolment seasons — because a campaign can be timed to the window and end when the window does.
The advantages
- — Suburb-level targeting. You pay to be seen by the people who can actually become customers, not a whole province.
- — A known, fixed cost. The daily rate is the whole price. No timeslot premiums, no site auctions.
- — It moves. If a position is not working, the board is repositioned — four times a month as standard — instead of waiting out a contract.
- — Eye-level repetition. The same commuters pass the board daily; repetition is what turns awareness into recall.
- — Proof of performance. Photo reporting after every move, which almost no other outdoor format provides as standard.
- — Speed. Live within 3 working days of artwork approval.
The honest disadvantages
No format is right for everyone, and it is worth knowing the limits before you spend:
- — It is not a mass-reach medium. If your customer is "everyone in South Africa", television, radio or highway gantries reach more people. A trailer wins on precision, not raw reach.
- — Measurement is indirect. Outdoor advertising does not produce click reports. You measure it through footfall, quote requests, promo codes and asking customers where they heard of you — reliable, but less granular than digital.
- — One message at a time. A board carries one message per print. Campaigns with many rotating offers need planned artwork changes (in-house printing makes this a 2 – 3 day turnaround, but it is still a schedule, not a dashboard toggle).
- — Operator quality varies widely. The industry has low-cost operators who skip insurance, licensing and repositioning. If a quote seems too cheap, ask who carries the risk and how often the trailer actually moves.
Mobile billboards vs the alternatives
Against a static billboard: the static site reaches everyone on one road for a monthly rental locked to that spot; the trailer reaches the suburb you choose at a fixed daily rate and moves if it needs to. Against radio: radio buys airtime across a station's whole footprint, with rates climbing by timeslot; the trailer stands in one suburb all day at one rate. Against digital ads: digital measures better and targets interests; the board cannot be scrolled past, blocked or skipped, and it builds local physical presence digital cannot. Most of our long-term clients run the board alongside digital, not instead of it.
How to start a campaign
Decide the suburb and the objective, prepare one clear message (we review artwork against the AIDA framework before printing — a weak headline gets flagged, not printed), and allow 3 working days from artwork approval to going live. In Gauteng, we run campaigns across 16 suburbs in Johannesburg and the greater Gauteng area — one WhatsApp message is enough to get a quote.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is a mobile billboard?+
A large-format advertising board mounted on a trailer, parked in high-traffic roadside positions and repositioned on a schedule, rather than fixed permanently to one site.
How much does mobile billboard advertising cost in South Africa?+
Pricing is typically a daily rate. Our Gauteng campaigns run from R200 to R285 per day depending on campaign length, all-inclusive.
Is a mobile billboard better than a static billboard?+
For a local business selling to specific suburbs, usually yes — you buy the exact area, at a known rate, with the option to move. For province-wide brand campaigns, large static and broadcast formats reach more people.
How long should a campaign run?+
Long enough for repetition to work — outdoor builds recall through repeated daily exposure. Month-to-month is available, but three months is where most local campaigns settle, and seasonal campaigns (enrolment, January gym sign-ups, event countdowns) are timed to their window.
Where can Simply Visible park a mobile billboard?+
Sixteen suburbs across Johannesburg and greater Gauteng — see the areas we park. If your suburb is not listed, ask: we add locations for campaigns that need them.
